England: new mandatory training requirement
Starting from 1st July 2022, all health and social care providers registered with the CQC must ensure that their staff receive training on learning disabilities and autism appropriate to their role. This new legal requirement is introduced by the Health and Care Act 2022.
The CQC will be looking to see whether providers have provided learning disability and autism training, and assessed the competencies of their staff following the training. The e-learning module in this course will help BDA members meet the requirement.
Employers should carefully consider the type of contact staff have with
patients/service users who have a learning disability or are autistic, and provide training suitable to their needs. To help you do so, we've also provided a Trainer Pack designed to help you share training with your team e.g. as part of a practice meeting.
In time, all providers will have to complete the 'Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training' on this topic. This training package is not yet available and Health Education England anticipate it will take a number of months to develop. Hence the BDA has developed this short course to help members meet the new CQC requirement in the interim.
